This afternoon we showcase the work of italian visual artist Claudio Parentela. A self-taught painter, illustrator, photographer and collagist, Claudio has been producing his striking and eclectic work full-time since 1995. Revealing a strong passion for his artwork, he describes his pieces as “freaky, stylish, anarchic, colourful, raw, dreamy, romantic, linear and twisted.”

“I have been a professional artist since 1995 and have had my work published in many many zines around the world. For 13-14 years, I tended to draw in black and white with tons of black Indian ink but over the last few years, I have experimented with colour and have collaborated with more artists and labels. I love my work because I’ve created it every day with so much love, passion and patience. All my life I have been creative and driven, and it’s wonderful to know that every day I can do what I love. It’s a wonderful ‘job’ and a fantastic way to live, I could not live without my art!’’

“I’m interested in fashion, underground comics, horror movies, old war photos, animals, food, gorgeous flowers and I gain inspiration from the people I encounter and the music I listen to. Things and people that influence me include Kundalini yoga, Qi Gong, Tarots (I created some tarot decks and I’m a professional tarot reader), Diamanda Galas, Ghedalia Tazartes, Miles Davis, Patty Waters, Coil, Shirley Horn, Sun Ra, the Incapaciptans, Merzbow etc.”

“On a typical day, I often start with some inspirational music or film to get the creative juices flowing. I love to cut and paste images in new, thought-provoking ways. Like each and every one of us, the result is always something unique; we’re all different and we mix and share our feelings and thoughts every minute of the day. From all my thoughts I will take one idea and work on it again and again, cutting it and pasting it on it a lot of weird materials and hitting it with many colours and black lines.”

“I’m currently working on some artwork for an exhibition in Detroit that I’ll be attending soon before preparing for two other shows in the next few months. I’ve recently began working on my new tarot deck, a new comic book, some t-shirts designs amongst other things! For the future, I want to carry on with my work for the rest of my life and continue to appreciate and celebrate the beauty of art.”
